I didn’t realize that the SR-71 used a mechanical link to start the engines. My experience has only been in commercial aviation, and we either used lots of electricity (787) or compressed air. Most of the ASUs we used were big diesel-powered monsters the size of Manhattan apartment, but Northwest had some cool and relatively tiny turbine-powered ASUs, essentially a small APU on a cart. But given how poorly our ramp rats treated ASUs and GPUs, most commonly just hitting the emergency shutdown instead of following proper shutdown/cooldown procedures, I can only guess that those turbine-powered units were expensive maintenance nightmares.
